BUG Gun

The BUG (Back-Up Gun) match is a home-grown sport at Pima Pistol that was started in 2010! It’s a chance to shoot that small handgun you usually carry for self defense against the clock!  This is a great starting point for new action pistol competitors which does not require drawing and uses less than a box of ammo per match.

Set Up & Tear Down

Action pistol matches require labor intensive set up and tear down.  Set up is often done on the day prior to the event.  Please contact the match director if you are able to help with set up and please help break stages down after the match.  By working together, we can maintain safe, fun, and manageable matches for our members and guests to enjoy.

Description

There are no minimum caliber requirements to shoot the BUG match and a lot fewer rules and procedures to learn than other popular competitions. Most guns must be small enough to fit into a 5.25″ x 7″ box with a magazine inserted (basically smaller than a Glock 19/23).

There are four divisions:

  1. Backup Pistol: Semi-automatic pistols (must fit with sights/optic and primary magazine in the box)

  2. Revolver: Any revolver with less than a 4” barrel (4” and longer barreled revolvers will shoot in “Big 5” category)

  3. Hideout Gun: Smaller Subcompact handguns (these must fit in a 4″ x 5.25″ box)

  4. Big 5: full size guns may be used but they AND ALL reloads must contain no more than 5 rounds

Holsters are not required*, but shooters should prepare to safely carry their unloaded handgun in a pocket, waistband, or in a case/box when not actively shooting. One or more reloads may be needed (although, not required).

* For safety, BUG stages start with the handgun safely staged or held at low ready. Sometimes drawing the gun is simulated using a blue gun to exchange for the pre-staged firearm. If a shooter wants to draw from the holster for practice, they may do so if safe and they clear it with the RO.

Matches are held the third Saturday of every month New shooters are welcome! There will be 4 stages requiring no more than 10 rounds each to complete and matches start at 9am year-round (please be there by 8:45 to sign in).
